Welcoming a baby into the world is a beautiful and life-changing experience. But for many new parents, it can also come with uncertainty and questions. Understanding some key aspects of newborn care can make this transition smoother and more enjoyable for both you and your baby.
As a prenatal and pediatric chiropractor, I want to share 10 essential things about newborns that can help you feel more confident and prepared to support your little one’s growth and well-being.
Let’s dive in!

1. Newborns Don’t Need a Bath Right Away
At birth, babies are covered in a white, waxy substance called vernix. This natural moisturizer protects their delicate skin, so delaying their first bath allows it to be absorbed for added benefits.
2. Their Vision is Still Developing
Newborns can only see about 8-12 inches in front of them—just enough to focus on their parent's face during feeding. Over the next few months, their vision will continue to sharpen and expand.
3. They Know Their Mother’s Scent and Voice
From birth, babies have an incredible ability to recognize their mother’s voice and scent. This strong connection helps them feel safe, secure, and comforted in their new world.
4. Colostrum is the Perfect First Food
Colostrum, the first milk a mother produces, is packed with antioxidants, immune support, and essential nutrients. If breastfeeding, remember that your baby only needs small amounts of colostrum in the first few days to thrive.
5. Newborns Love to Be Held Close
Skin-to-skin contact with mom helps babies regulate their nervous system, including body temperature and heart rate, while also lowering stress levels. This simple bonding experience is vital for their emotional and physical well-being.
6. They Make a Lot of Noises—And That’s Normal!
Newborns grunt, sigh, and make all sorts of little sounds, even in their sleep. These noises are often just their respiratory and digestive systems adjusting to life outside the womb.
7. Their Sleep is Anything but Predictable
Newborns have tiny stomachs, about the size of a marble at birth, so they wake frequently to eat. Sleeping patterns can be unpredictable, with wake-ups happening every 2-3 hours (sometimes more or less) depending on their needs.
8. They Can Get Overstimulated Easily
Bright lights, loud noises, new people, and too much activity can leave babies feeling overwhelmed. If your little one seems extra fussy or struggles to settle after a busy day, remember they may just need a quiet, calming space to unwind—just like we do!
9. Their Digestive System is Still Maturing
A newborn’s digestive system is learning to process food and eliminate waste for the first time. The grunting and movements they make are often a sign of their tiny tummies adjusting.
10. Bonding is Essential for Their Development
Cuddling, holding, and responding to your baby’s needs help build a strong emotional connection, fostering a sense of security and healthy development in the early months of life.
